Wesley Groups

What is it?  Small groups that meet every week for the purpose of discipling believers.   These small groups are the number one way that we make disciples.

What is a disciple?  A disciple is a committed follower of Jesus Christ who seeks to live a life marked by continued growth in understanding and obedience.  That is what we all must be if we are serious about being committed followers of Jesus.  Therefore, we must be engaged in some study activity on a regular basis that helps us grow in our understanding of God.

Why are they called Wesley Groups? John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, believed that we all need to be in three types of groups.  We need to be regular attendees of corporate worship – that would be our Sunday morning worship service, we need to be in a group for study and we need to be in an even smaller group for accountability.  Our small groups are modeled after and are a combination of the last two and since we are indeed Methodists, let’s call these groups Wesley Groups.

What do they do at these meetings? There are five ingredients of a Wesley Group meeting: prayer, fellowship, study, accountability, and service.  Every ministry of the church should begin and end with a time of prayer and there should be a brief time of fellowship to get caught up on each other’s lives before beginning the study.  Each group will select their own study.  It may be a “going deeper” study of a portion of scripture, a topical study or a book study.  Each person in the group will always have the option of asking the group to hold them accountable for growth in some area of their life.  (For many this has been a profoundly important part of the small group experience.)  And, finally, each group will seek out an activity where once a year or perhaps even more often, they can be in service together.  Nothing draws folks closer than doing some small project together.

Can I join any group?  Yes!  There is always an empty chair waiting for you. Send us an email for more information

What groups are currently meeting and what are they studying?  Pastor Tony’s group resumes on April 22 and will meet for seven weeks on Wednesdays at 6:45pm in the church library.  They are discussing the theological points of the best selling book The Shack.  Please read the entire book before coming.
