Read: Exodus 1-3
Focus Verse: “‘When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.’ The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.” (Exodus 1:16-17).
Devotion: So much happens in the first 3 chapters of Exodus! Israel enslaved, genocide, murder, marriage, and a mission is given to save Israel. What stands out to me among all of this is the idea that 1 good person doing what’s right—doing 1 good thing—can produce hope for a whole nation! The midwives did what was right, they took a stand and refused to kill babies at Pharaoh’s request. They risked their own lives, lying to Pharaoh’s face about the babies they rescued. Because of their willingness to risk their own lives for what is right, Moses was able to be born and grow up. God sends Moses to save his people, to save a nation. But Moses’ story and that flicker of hope all started with one person standing up for what is right. WOW!
Pray: LORD help me to see the power of one kind act, and help me to have the courage to do it. Amen!
Additional Scripture: “I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!” (Habakkuk 3:18)
