Read: 1 Kings 3-5

Focus Verse: “The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, ‘Since you have asked for this and not long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart,…”(1 Kings 3:10-12a).

Devotion: Solomon was granted his request because he got it right. This reminds me how Adam and Eve were faced with the choice to rely on God’s wisdom and guidance, or to try and make it on their own. They chose to try on their own apart from God and we know how that turned out. Solomon is faced with any desire being granted and his request of God is selfless. He asks for a discerning heart from God so that he can lead God’s people. The focus is on wanting to serve God’s people to his fullest extent and knowing he needs God’s help to do it. Solomon seeks to rely his rule and judgment on God, do we? God is pleased when our desires are to better love and serve others.

Pray: LORD I pray for the wisdom, a discerning heart, so that I can seek what will truly help others and bring Your justice. Amen.

Additional Scripture: “Blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence.” (Jer. 17:7)
