Read: 1 Samuel 28-31
Focus Verse: “Samuel said, why do you consult me, now that the LORD has departed from you and become your enemy? The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David.” (1 Samuel 28:16).
Devotion: How funny when Samuel said this years ago Saul wouldn’t listen, and even cut ties somewhat to Samuel. Yet here he is, asking Samuel for advice at his lowest point. I think Saul shows his true colors here. Why now does he consult? Because he’s come to his end and can tell he’s done for. Have you ever known someone like this? They won’t listen to the truth until the truth catches up to them? What’s sad is Saul had opportunities to relent, but the people who cared about him the most, Samuel and David, he pushed away. The only people genuinely seeking Saul’s good are the very ones he refused to listen to. Saul gets what’s coming to him, but I can’t help but wonder if maybe it could have all done differently if Saul had just listened to those who cared about him.
Pray: LORD humble me so I can listen to truth from those who care about me. Amen.
