Read: 1 Chronicles 6

Focus Verse: “These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark came to rest there.” (1 Chronicles 6:31).

Devotion: Following these lineages is not the easiest, or most exciting reading. Yet, it’s still important to do so. Today we read about the temple musicians David appoints. They trace their history back to Levi. They are Levites. Levites are the priestly tribe who take care of the temple and do the religious rites of the temple. I feel like often we treat church musicians as just that, musicians. Their job is to play music. However, from their very first uses here, they are priests. Church musicians don’t just play music, they take on priestly and pastoral roles as they lead the congregation in musical worship. The message of the gospel is communicated through music, so as priests, church musicians have a sacred charge to act as priests, using music to shepherd God’s people.

Pray: LORD bless the church musicians as they are priests of your word. Amen.

Additional Scripture: “Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one Boyd you are called to live in peace.” (Col. 3:15)
