Read: Numbers 14-15

Focus Verse: “But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.” (14:10)

Devotion: Oh man! So the LORD promised the Israelites they’d be given the land, and when scouts returned they let fear lead them to lie to the Israelites. They convince the people the promised land is so dangerous and scary that there is no way they can ever hope to occupy it. So, the people turn on their leaders. They want to stone them and appoint new ones, a true coup de ta. But God promised it! God said it’d happen! Why do they no longer have faith that God can deliver them? “…in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?”… (14:11b) God has done plenty, he saved them from Egypt by dismantling the most powerful nation in the world at the time. He has led them through the wilderness and fed them every day. He has performed signs and wonders and done so much to capture the heart of the people. However, the people are stubborn, and scared! Do you ever feel like God has told you what to do, yet you refuse? Despite God promising you blessings, you’d rather run away and not trust God to get you through when it gets tough? Or maybe you have a hard time believing that God would die for you, that God would love you enough to forgive your sin and want to be in relationship with you for eternity. Like Israel sometimes it’s far too easy to let fear grip our heart, but the love of God can cast out all fear.

Pray: LORD no matter how scary it gets, help me to follow wherever you lead. Amen!

Additional Scripture: “Those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.” (Isiah 40:31).
