Read: Job 35-37

Focus Verse: “If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand? Your wickedness only affects humans like yourself, and your righteousness only other people. People cry out under the load of oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful.” (Job 35:7-9).

Devotion: Well Elihu at least has one thing right. While he’s wrong about Job, it’s true that our wickedness or goodness affect others. Our choices in life—to live in love and fairness, or fear and hate—have a direct effect on other people. Aside from his name (how people will perceive him), God isn’t affected by our choices. That is, they may break God’s heart or bring great joy, but God is not hurt or otherwise changed by our actions. Why God calls us to obedience then is because our actions have consequences with other people. Our choices don’t change God, but they change lives.

Pray: LORD help me see the responsibility I have with my life. Help me live with love and righteousness so that I seek to do no harm towards others. Amen.

Additional Scripture: “Give your burdens to the LORD, and He will take care of you.” (Psalm 55:22)
