Read: 1 Chronicles 1-2

Focus Verse: “These were the kings who reigned in Edom before any Israelite king reigned: Bella son of Beor, whose city was named Dinhabah.” (1 Chronicles 1:43).

Devotion: This is not the first or last time we’ll open a book with genealogies. It can be repetitive and boring, but if you pay attention things can differ and stand out. I find it fascinating that in the middle of Israel and Judah’s family histories this line of Edomite Kings is inserted. The author finds it important to show the history of the land Israel inherited. Of crucial importance to Israel seems to be the people’s history, but also the national and even land ownership histories. With the rise of things like ‘23 and me’ it seems even now we value our history and how we connect to it. I think part of it is seeking to feel we are part of something bigger, something that connects us to one another. If so, in Christ we are sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters. So, in Christ we are connected to all of creation. What an incredible shared history that is!

Pray: LORD in You we are part of something incredible! May we always be aware we are all in this together and are all connected together in You. Amen.

Additional Scripture: “The Lord is my strength and my song; He has given me victory. This is my God, and I will praise Him.” (Exodus 15:2)
