Read: Genesis 14-15

Focus Verse: “After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.’” (Genesis 15:1).

Devotion: Abram goes to war to rescue Lot. He is wildly successful and there are great treasures and riches to be had, yet Abram refuses to take anything for himself. Abram lead the charge and would have been entitled to take as much of the reward as he wanted. However what we see instead is that when Abram refuses a reward (14:24) we find out why at the beginning of Chapter 15. What God says really got to me today. “I am your shield, your very great reward.” God is Abram’s reward. Wow! Not treasure, not glory, not spoils of war, but God himself. Help me God to live a life where I am focused on you as my reward.

Prayer: LORD no amount of money, fame, or honors is worth You. Help remind me today that my life should be lived with You as my focus, with a relationship with You as my reward. LORD let me seek nothing else but You. Amen!

Additional Scripture: “God bless those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
