Read: 1 Samuel 1-3
Focus Verse: “I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind.” (1 Sam 2:35a).
Devotion: Those who were already priests by birth we find out are acting like scoundrels. Those promised to be priests forever have become wicked and abuse their power. It’d be easy to assume you could get away with anything because God has an everlasting promise to keep the priests in the same family. Yet, because of their sin we see God will instead choose a new priest based on their heart and character, not their family. We see what the LORD’s heart looks for. The LORD calls and chooses Samuel. God also said he’d punish Eli and his house for their sin, and Eli takes it like a champ saying “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.” (1 Sam 3:18). What is good; God calls and walks with those who’s hearts are set on God. Like Samuel, unlike Eli’s sons.
Pray: LORD allow my heart to be set on You so that You may call and walk with me. Amen.
Additional Scripture: “Blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.” (Luke 11:28)
