Read: Psalm’s 32-35

Focus Verse: “A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.” (Psalm 33:17-19).

Devotion: We can substitute ‘horse’ for many different things. ‘Money’ is a vain hope for deliverance. Power, stuff, cars, relationships, jobs, TV, clothing, you name it, ______ is a vain hope for deliverance. That’s because despite all their strengths, _____ cannot save. Money, power, cars, relationships, etc, cannot save. There are so many cool and fun things in this world that definitely can bring joy and pleasure, but we must be reminded not to look to them for deliverance from death, for they do not have that power. They have no ability to save. Only God has the power to deliver us from death! When you hear this common idiom, ‘Jesus saves’, think of this psalm, for only God has the power to deliver, only God should get our hope. So yes, Jesus does save, and how vain is it to place our hope anywhere else?

Pray: LORD together we proclaim: “We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you.” (Psalm 33:20-22)

Additional Scripture: “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
