Read: Deuteronomy 21-23

Focus Verse: “Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the LORD your God with your own mouth.” (Deu 23:23).

Devotion: I’ve heard it said that our word is all we have. We should keep our word and follow through with what we say we will do. Period, right? Well why is it so hard sometimes? If I say I’ll do something I should do it. Sometimes it is simple, but also not. God, why does an addict swear it’s their last high, but then struggle to keep their word? God calls us to be true to our word, but surely God understands how hard that can be sometimes, right? Look it doesn’t say it causes God to detest anyone, but rather that we’re guilty of sin when we break our vow. Your word, your guilt. So if sin is the root, then it’s something deeper, and a God who died on a cross and resisted sin knows how hard it is to break free and keep your word. I believe God’s heart breaks when witnessing us struggle to keep our vow and stay in relationship with him.

Pray: LORD all I can control is me, so I pray that you’d start with me, make me a man of my word. Amen!

Additional Scripture: “He made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” (Psalm 100:3)
